The series follows 17-year-old Rue Bennett (Zendaya), a drug addict fresh from rehab, who’s struggling to make sense of her future. Though Rue seemingly returned home at the end of the episode, it's unclear if she will be returning to rehab this season. Based on the trailer, Maddy's next steps are a little more clear, as she appears clutching the stolen Cal and Jules sex tape, which she will likely use to blackmail Nate. While the trailer features multiple shots of a gun, it's unlikely Maddy has murderous intentions against Cassie, though the situation is likely to get violent. Bolstered by a tour de force performance by Zendya, the episode was a heart-wrenching reminder of the debilitating reality of drug addiction. After Rue's mother tries to stage an intervention and take her daughter back to rehab, Rue suffers a breakdown and decides to run from her family and eventually the police in a nail-biting chase across town as Rue attempts to seek refugee with numerous friends, Fez and Laurie, trying to get her next fix. Season 2, Episode 5, was one of Euphoria's most emotional and visceral episodes yet. In the trailer, Maddy is plotting revenge against her best friend for sleeping with her ex, saying she might " actually want to murder" Cassie, while she has " a few ideas" for Nate. Next week's episode is set to pick up in the fallout of Rue's explosive actions. Later on, as Rue is on the run and suffering from the effects of withdrawal, she spills Cassie and Nate's big secret in front of everyone at the Howard household, including Maddy. During episode 5, the duo informs Rue's mother of her ongoing drug use, and in a fit of rage, Rue seemingly severs ties with Jules and Elliot. Rue's girlfriend Jules secretly grows closer to Elliot in the following episodes.
There, Rue meets Elliot, and the two experience an instant connection. During the season premiere, Nate begins a secret fling with Maddy's best friend, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), at the New Year's Eve party.
Two love triangles have been a major focus since Euphoria returned to HBO last month for a second season.
